Whiskey, craft beer and gin — stories and tips from Jim “Flash” Gordon and the team behind Waterford’s award-winning bar.

When Revolution started some 11 years ago, I was one of the first bars to stock Budvar, Franziskaner, Spaten and Leffe.

Shopping local is the new buzz word these days, and in the craft beer business it’s no different. Irish craft beer is as good, if not better, than our English and European counterparts.

I’m always a bit worried getting new beers on draught — will the punters like them, will the staff embrace them, am I mad getting rid of the mainstream beers one by one? I suppose I am.

We are used to going to our local bar, ordering a pint or a long neck of beer, craft or not — it’s what we do.

The best craft beers are usually the ones brewed closest to your local bar — the kegs are fresh, probably a week or so old.

It was like Santa arrived at Revolution & Oskars last Thursday. Our delivery of Christmas beers arrived, tastier and better than last year.

No big marketing budgets, no Rocky Mountains and no Santa Claus driving a 40ft juggernaut through the snow.
